Studio Monkey Shoulder Nigeria: Kem Kem

An exploration of Nigerian grassroots music

Olukemi Lijadu, a.k.a. Kem Kem is a Nigerian DJ and artist based in Lagos. She has opened for artists such as Tems, Skepta and Princess Nokia. As a 2024 Villa Albertine resident, she is currently researching the connections between Chicago House and West African music.

Join Kem Kem on an electrifying journey through the vibrant sounds of Nigeria. She’ll be taking us on a sonic exploration of Nigeria's most exciting music genres, from the infectious rhythms of cruise beat to the soulful melodies of 'oyapiano', the infectious grooves of afropop, and the cutting-edge sounds of alte.

She’ll be chatting with some of Nigeria's music luminaries including Yinka Bernie, the visionary behind Egwu Records, dedicated to preserving Nigeria's rich cultural history through music. Aniko, the driving force behind Group Therapy, a collective at the forefront of electronic music in Lagos. And Codename KND, one of the pioneers of Mainland House who are dedicated to spreading the gospel of house music across Nigeria.

Kem Kem also welcomes a very special guest to the studio: Temilade Adeyinka, co-founder of Femme Africa. Discover how Femme Africa is empowering women in the music industry through support, training, and connection.

This show is part of a series to celebrate our Studio Monkey Shoulder initiative with Monkey Shoulder Whisky – spotlighting the 5 different countries we’re launching this year. There are just 3 weeks to go to apply for a £10K grassroots fund in Nigeria, the UK, Taiwan, India, and the USA (Miami).

If you’re part of a DJ collective; organising your own club nights or independent festival; or managing a DIY venue or online community radio station – this initiative is about supporting those spaces (digital and physical) where people can come together to create, listen, and connect over music. Deadline – 9th May! Find out more
